Pedigrees
A pedigree provides documented information on a dog's ancestry and titles. More importantly, a vizsla pedigree will detail the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation of Animals) or Penn Hip ratings on hips and, more recently, elbows. Responsible vizsla breeders do a number of health tests prior to breeding their dogs. The OFA or Penn Hip rating gives the breeder an indication of the soundness of the hip and elbow joints and allows the breeder to make careful choices to reduce the probability of hip or elbow dysplaysia. Breeders will also have a CERF test for eye health done to certify the dog is free of heritable eye diseases. When considering a breeder, be sure that, at minimum, examinations of hips, elbows and eyes have been completed on the sire and dam and that there are at least three generations of OFA or Penn Hip ratings.
